The Jazz & Hip Hop Dance class is a fun and energetic way for the children to learn a combination of new dance styles.
The class consists of a warm-up with big yoga/stretching combinations, followed by some step-patterns to get the children coordinated and used to the pace of class. The steps are built upon as the children’s technique improves and gradually step combinations rise into a dance routine. The dance routine is added to each class and by the end of the course the students will have learnt a full choreography.
We use a combination of age appropriate but funky beats that are drawn from various modern pop, hip hop and jazz/funk influences, including music from Glee. The children also get to use props (clothes, sunglasses, bandanas etc) and really work on finding their strengths and challenges in dance.
We focus on safe dance practices and correct dance technique including body placement and alignment. The students have fun learning new movements and at the same time explore their own creativity and develop their own personal style. Many music genres are used over the course and all students get a copy of the music that we use…so get ready to see them strut their funky stuff at home too!
This is a fantastic class for both boys and girls and as well as focusing on dance our teacher ensures that the children learn team effort, a good attitude and discipline in the dance studio.

| A. | Warm-up with slow music and stretching. This is sometimes done in a circle or all students facing the teacher. We review rules of the classroom: Listening, Having fun, dancing, helping friends, smiling, performing and having fun! |
| B. | Start doing dance moves to get the energy and blood flowing and introduce basic movements that will be in the main choreography. This is also sometimes done in a circle or all students facing the teacher. |
| C. | Put together repetitive moves for the routine. This is where each lesson changes and we add moves, make direction changes, move rapidly back and forth, diagonal, left and right, upstage and downstage. This teaches the kids to work in a group and of course, stage direction which is important for all dancers. |
| D. | Break time |
| E. | We review our moves (as mentioned in C) – this is the main crux of the lesson (choreography) and also we practice hip-hop animals. I encourage each child to mimic an animal they like through a dance movement. We put this in the routine as well. This part of the lesson also includes 'battling' where in hip-hop, two kids get up and express themselves in a friendly challenge to just 'go for it'! |
| F. | Across the floor: We do some tumbling, some walking funky and some hip hop animal movements. |
| G. | Review ‘C’ again and prepare for parent’s ‘showtime’. Have the kids come up in groups to encourage each other and get used to performing. |
| H. | Showtime! All parents are invited in for a ten minute display where they wow their folks! |
| I. | Kids get stickers as a reward, which is introduced at the beginning of class as an incentive. |
