Tspace Philosophy

A School for Today’s Child

Before Kspace opened, Tokyo lacked schools that were open in their approach to parenting and education. A major part of the Kspace philosophy is to reflect our personality in all we do – and we are a young, forward thinking organization of very curious adults!

We are constantly on the look out for fresh ideas, trends in education, current children’s interests and the best materials. It is an essential part of our ‘concept’ that we move with the needs of our children and can be flexible enough to bend to their educational demands. Curriculums are beautifully planned and executed but timetables are not fixed in stone, and CAN be changed if children show us that they are very keen to investigate subjects further. Our teachers are very used to thinking on their feet and between them there can’t be a more creatively inspired group of people anywhere!

A School for Today’s Parents

Possibly one of the key elements of our philosophy could best be described in modern terms as ‘keeping it real’! We are a team of very down to earth and approachable individuals, who need to communicate with one another, our children and our parents with sincerity. Many of our team have their own small children, and we understand that Kspace families may experience their ‘down days’ in the city – yet our school provides a haven of laughter and positive energy. Amongst our main beliefs is the fact that pressures, parental worries and increasing demands on our children can be smoothed when the relationship between school and parent is one of trust, friendship and openness. Our school is a place that parents enjoy coming along to as much as the kiddies do! We foster community and value friendships.

A School for Today’s Tokyo

Children of the world today are bright, fast thinking and are constantly exposed to many stimuli (or over exposed!). This is exceptionally so in Tokyo, where there is so much going on around them. It is easy for small children to take on too much mentally and there is no accurate way to measure the stress that living in a built up environment creates.

From the beginning we have wanted Kspace to be like a little separate world for our kiddies – a place that is like ‘home’ for children who are here from abroad, and a lovely international community for residents. It is our job to provide the balance that the city cannot. We give them an eye for detail and awareness of the sounds and beauty around them. We bring the countryside into the metropolis, the colours back into the city-grey and music to distract from the buzzing white noise. By very nature of the programme’s diversity our children display a strong interest in art, creativity and music and movement. Our philosophy focuses too on the belief that a sound grounding in music can help us develop in many areas, and we see evidence of this all the time at the school. Our children may suddenly break into a performance, in front of their classmates. They love the surprise on their friend’s faces, the applause and the feeling of sharing/bonding with others.

We also help teach our children (and parents) how to love Tokyo..how to enjoy the fascinating cultural facets and its lovely hidden spots, and by giving them amazing memories to cherish in the future.

School for Today’s World

We impart that our world is made up of many personalities, races and cultures. We have all races of children in our programme, many languages and age groups. Our Staff have all traveled extensively, are broad minded, interesting people with diverse backgrounds and we use a lighthearted approach to open the children’s minds to the joy of diversity on our planet.

A major part of our belief is that children need to build a strong sense of self respect and a positive self image. We can help give them this and in turn they learn how to treat people around them. The atmosphere at our school is one of cooperation, pragmatism and praise. It is non-competitive, and we do not measure children against one another. We teach them that the joy is derived from enjoyment gained whilst working on a task, and the fulfillment achieved upon its completion, not by always coming first place. They begin to feel enriched by working on projects and seeing that everyone has a totally different approach and finished result, and that we can also get great joy from watching others at work.

A School for Today’s Teachers

Staffing in massive cities can be challenging. Teachers at many schools are transient. Not so at Tspace! Our Staff is the best in Tokyo and it is our philosophy that attracts, and retains, the very best people out there!

Our teachers are not only experienced, dedicated educators, but they are also enthusiastic, funny, loving, interesting characters. Unlike schools that employ people on 6 month contracts, the core of our team has been with us since we began Tspace. The children are not only in very capable hands but are spending time with extremely creative, young people that LOVE their job. The teachers are artistic, musically minded and exceptionally gifted; many of our key workers are recognised artists and it is part of our philosophy to draw on their skills, and allow freedom of expression when teaching.

Our teacher’s ability to empathise, care for their children and play a key role in each child’s development is key. Kspace is very proud of the fact that our core team remains with us, after 5 years. They have all played a massive part in the history of the school and consider their role far more than a simple ‘job’.
